Every month I go over my advertising systems I have in place and determine if they are really worth keeping. Those that are making money get to stay and those that aren’t get the boot.

This month I have decided to ditch Project Wonderful. It started out as a good idea. Offer a low cost alternative to the 125×125 ad boxes that seem so popular these days. The problem was, I had no control over the cost of advertising on my site. The cost was all determined by traffic and a lot of times, the code wasn’t read properly by the Project Wonderful site so my average price was $.01. Ideally, people would begin to bid on the spot they wanted and others would outbid them…etc etc until you were getting a decent price. In turn you could then bid on other sites to place your own ad, not unlike Entrecard only this is cash instead of credits.

At one point my account was up to $2.04 or so and I decided to take out some ads on other blogs/sites. That $2 drained fast and now for one reason or another my code isn’t working…and no ads have been placed recently.

So, that being said. I have removed Project Wonderful from my blog and I have no intention of reinstating it. Without the ability to set a price I think is fair for the amount of traffic I get, I just don’t like the way the system works. My traffic also didn’t increase much as a result for using PW. Entrecard on the other hand is staying. I get quite a bit of traffic from using it and the system works a lot better now after they changed their formula for calculating how credits are accumulated.

blah blah I always hear the same gripes about windows, whether its the latest and greatest OS or not. I have 4 computers in my house. 1 is an XP Professional system I have to use for work as it is a corporate thing and not under my control and works fine but is about 4 years old and showing age…ie…its incredibly slow now. Another is an XP Professional system (of which I am now writing a comment with…) and my game system is Vista Ultimate 64 bit with 8 Gigs of Memory and an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 Ghz. Last but not least is an iMac with the sphere like base and flat screen which my wife uses that is now starting to show age and slowing down and/or whining a lot…

My game system is flawless and runs everything. some software you have to tell to run as administrator but so what? after that it works fine. Some games I have had trouble with but I didn’t really care because they weren’t my core game anyway which is Everquest II. Not only that, but try using more than 3GB of memory on a PC without a 64 bit OS…can’t be done. I love having 8GB of RAM.

As for business applications…Vista runs my audio software fine and I am able to edit my podcasts just fine as well as do most normal things I usually do with a computer.

It’s unfortunate Apple has gotten such a death grip on the consumer and led them to believe their computers are the end-all be-all of the everday computing platform but it’s just not so.

I will agree with nearly everyone that the iPod in all its forms is superior to most everything of its ilk out there…except maybe the Zune. Oh yeah I said it, the Zune. I prefer an open format device over proprietary device any day. That being said, I use my iPod because it was free! I won it courtesy of John Chow.com.

Anyway…my point is that its easy to bash an operating system because of defects you find that don’t suit your needs. I find it more productive to discover and use systems that meet my needs instead. If I focused on hardware and software the fell short of what I needed to do instead of focusing on what works…I would go insane because there isn’t one piece of hardware/software/operating system on the planet that accomplishes exactly everything I want it to do when I need it to do it.

Yeah, suck on that haters!

The pen itself is a regular pen but hidden inside the top portion of it is a portable thumb drive. This is great for travelers or commuters to store those large files on, plus it’s a pen!

To win it, all you need to do is comment on this post or blog about it. Suffice to say i’ll give it away here if I win it since I already have a 1GB secure drive I use for work.

It’s once again time to report my figures for April 2008. I am no John Chow, but my blog is making money and I think its important to be honest, even when you aren’t making the kind of money that Chow or Darren Rowse are making. This blog isn’t about getting rich quick. It’s about my journey to become independently wealthy.

I started this blog a year ago in May, 2007 and at that time it wasn’t making any money at all. The challenges for any new blog are getting traffic and loyal readership and making money doing it. I never recommend anything I don’t do or use myself. I’m not averse to doing paid reviews, but none have come up yet. ReviewMe hasn’t accepted any of my blogs (probably because I don’t meet certain traffic requirements) so my sources of income may seem odd.

Million Dollar Portfolio isn’t the only blog I write. I also run an Investment blog that accounts for some of the income you see reported here. Why report it here and not on my investment blog? Simply because this blog is about making money online and that’s just what both of my blogs do. It’s all the same income to me.

Now, without further ado…

Traffic Statistics

According to Google Analytics, page views from April 1 to April 30 were 1647(an increase of over 1000 visits over the month of March) with 1940 (an increase of 1440 over the month of March) unique visitors. That’s an average of 1.17 pages per visit and a bounce rate of 90%. Comparing these figures to March, my bounce rate dropped by 1% and my average pages per visit went up by .01%. Not a big deal right? Wrong. What this means is readers are sticking around a bit longer than they had before and that’s a good thing.

Most of my traffic came from my use of Entrecard. Last month, Entrecard changed the way credits are calculated so the massive droppers don’t benefit as much from 300+ a day drops on other sites. I

Your RSS subscriber numbers

Your Alexa ranking

Your Technorati authority

Then what happens is you stop getting ads placed on your widget. This happened to my investment blog. When it got over 100 EC to advertise on, my frequency of advertisers dropped off. I wasn’t even spam dropping…if you will. I would simply visit the blogs I liked, click on their widget and without even trying my price shot up to over 100 EC. The point is, dropping 300 cards a day doesn’t make your blog any more valuable, it only serves to limit the number of people that can actually advertise with you. I prefer to be more organic about it.

15% of the visits in March were new which means 85% were returning visits and that’s good news. It means I have loyal readers but enough new ones that eventually something is going to pique their interest and convert them to RSS subscribers. I value RSS subscribership more than anything because its a better barometer of how many people actually read your blog vs the traffic results from Google.

Income Sources

My top income source for March is once again Text-Link-Ads. Advertising on this blog and my investment blog through Text-Link-Ads is only $15 a month.

Here’s the breakdown:

Text-Link-Ads: $53.00

Adsense: $4.97 (after reinstating in a higher heat area)

Clickbank: $0.00

LinkShare: $0.00

NeverBlueAds: $0.00 *is the banner ad market dead?

ScratchBack: $4.10 *It’s $5 to advertise through ScratchBack, just click on the text.

PPP Direct: $0.00 *no reviews requested so far

Project Wonderful: $1.04 *average cost of $.02 to advertise a 125×125 banner here! cheap!

AdToll: $0.00 (they make the widget in the upper right of the blog and a 160×600 ad in the sidebar)

Those are the sources of income for this blog. Hosting is $15 a month for all my sites so at the end of the month I netted $47.81 which surpasses the income from March (progress!). Gross income was $62.81 from all sources.

Summing It All Up

As you can see, i’m not going to be able to retire on that kind of income but readership is growing and as traffic and readership increase, so should my income. It comes down to basics. The more eyeballs you have, the more you can charge for advertising. This should be good news for all you bloggers out there wondering how you can make money doing this. My 3 rules are:

Write about what you know.

Content is king, don’t rip off other people’s stuff…come up with your own

Don’t put all your advertising eggs in Google’s basket. Find what works for your site and don’t be afraid to drop anything that isn’t working.

I give each new ad program about a month before I decide to ditch it if the numbers aren’t good. After all, its no skin off my back getting rid of valuable ad space that isn’t performing. Just because they haven’t worked for me, doesn’t mean they won’t work for you. In fact I know several other blogs that use these exact programs and they earn much much more than i do. It comes down to how much time you can spend marketing and promoting these, your blog design, how much traffic you get and most of all ad placement. Ads above the fold tend to perform better but there are all kinds of theories on that. You’ll have to figure out what works for you.

If you haven’t done so already, sign up for the programs I mentioned in this post. You can put them to work on your blog almost immediately and start experimenting with advertising. Some bloggers will tell you not to advertise anything until you have a lot of traffic but I started from the get go. The key is to have a blog design that allows you some space for ads but plenty of room for your content. Remember, without content it won’t matter how many ads you have on your site because there won’t be anything worth sticking around for.

*I still have some schwag(free stuff) from the Ad:Tech expo to give away. Just make a comment on this post or this post and let me know what you want. The Rubic’s Cube is already taken.

I guess nobody likes getting free stuff. Maybe you didn’t need a mousepad or a squishy stress-relief ball. Someone, however wanted a rubic’s cube. I’ll be sending that off as soon as I get the postal details.

Congratulations to Tracy Kehr who was the only one to comment on the post and won her choice of prize.

I haven’t heard from anyone at the expo if I have won any iPods or other gear, but I’ll keep you posted if I do win. For those of you that are into podcasts, Episode 6 of my movie review/gaming podcast is up now and you can download it or subscribe via iTunes. Go to http://eastwingpodcast.com for more information.

April was a busy month for me at work which is why there haven’t been a lot of posts here about making money online or making money by blogging. Sometimes there just isn’t much to say and I would rather not say anything than fill a post with meaningless banter.

I will be experimenting again with another affiliate marketing foray but my past trials didn’t fare so well. Unfortunately, most of the products offered from affiliate programs like ClickBank are things like “Warcraft Riches” or believe it or not, make money programs…it all seems so silly. I can see the scenario now. I write a post about making money from affiliate programs by advertising a make money from affiliate programs program? That makes my head hurt.

I’m trying to find tangible assets to make money from not just ebooks about making money, that never really helps anyone. Also, after the fiasco with Joel Comm (I almost ordered that $9.95 adsense book) before I found out he had an auto subscription for a monthly fee. Previously I purchased the Google Assassin package which also has a monthly subscription fee but after using it for a month solid and making only $15 and spending an additional $125 in advertising costs, I cancelled it. Maybe I’m not cut out for affiliate marketing or maybe I just haven’t found the right niche market yet, I don’t know. I understand that it takes some money to make money but I think for now I’ll stick with what I know works.

What are your experiences in affiliate marketing? How do you advertise your products and do you get a good ROI?

If you are new to the Entrecard game and want to get a massive head start on advertising on some of the most expensive sites out there (like JohnChow.com) now is the time.

John Chow is giving away 10,000 Entrecard credits to some lucky blogger.

I use entrecard as a way of doing some free viral marketing. Some have argued that the traffic isn’t high quality enough because most people drop a card an move along. I disagree. I think any traffic is good traffic. Think of it this way, if you got 1,000,000 hits in one month and even 1% of that 1,000,000 stopped to read something you said and then 1% of those readers subscribed to your blog, you would have 100 new readers that month. That’s pretty darn cool.

Head on over to JohnChow.com and enter the contest and then if you don’t want em you can give them away yourself.

Today is the one day a year we all decide to celebrate this round ball spinning through space. It’s Earth Day. You should try to do something green today. Instead of eating at McDonald’s or some other fast food chain, bring a sack lunch. Instead of driving to work, ride your bike or walk or take a bus. There are some amazing statistics out there regarding energy and consumption that basically state if we all could focus on doing something like not driving for one day it would save millions in gallons of oil used.

So let’s all do something to keep the planet healthy today!

I got some free schwag from the Ad:Tech show floor that I am giving away. Although nearly every booth was giving away an iPhone or an iPod touch, I won’t know if I won any of those until they announce it either through email I guess, or if one just magically shows up on my doorstep.

I am giving away the following prizes as you can see in this picture. Yeah, sure it’s not much but hey, it’s FREE.

There’s a mouse pad from AdShuffle which had a pretty large booth with multiple displays around and also a Rubic’s Cube from the same company. Clickbooth gave a deck of cards with their logo on it. WebJamAds was forcing everyone to take one of these stress globes, you know the kind you squeeze to relieve stress. And last but not least a winking mouse pad from userplane.com

All you need to do is comment on this post to be eligible to win. On Friday the 25th I’ll pick 5 lucky winners. You can only win one prize so it won’t matter if you comment multiple times, you still only get one entry. I’ll let you know if I won any iPhones or iPods if/when I hear about it.

John Chow isn’t the only one going to Ad:Tech. Although this will be my first time going, I’m no stranger to conferences. I used to attend the annual 3D Design conferences held every year in the bay area. I try to go to MacWorld which is also held in San Francisco but I hate that they charge you just to attend the exhibit floor. After all, the vendors have already paid for they booths, why should I have to pony up extra dough just to see them hock their wares?

This week though, I will be attending Ad:Tech because if you registered by today you could get in for free. Otherwise, it’s a $125 entry fee for the exhibit floor.

The coolest thing about attending any exhibit hall is all the giveaways that happen. Usually they scan your badge for each drawing and in return they get your email or mailing address to send literature your way. It’s a good system.

I’m looking forward to meeting John Chow if I can find him at all in the crowds on the floor. Best of all, if I win anything in any drawings it’s likely I’ll just be giving them away on the blog so stay tuned. I’ll take what photos I can and post them so you can see what you are missing if you aren’t attending.

In the world of blogging, there are very few who become superstars. Those that do got there by being consistent and following their own rules they set out with. These successful bloggers also build a reputation with their content and quality posts. These are important if you are going to sell space to advertisers or at some point decide to sell your entire blog.

One such individual is the Irish owner of JohnCow.com. The blog started as a parody of the JohnChow.com site but quickly grew into its own. A lot of early traffic can probably be attributed to misspellings of people trying to get to JohnChow.com. It was a brilliant move in registering a domain name so similar and then putting a twist on it by writing from the point of view of a cow.

What started as a parody has become a well followed blog. Now, it’s up for sale. According to the site’s owner, the blog currently makes about $3500 a month from advertising revenues. The site is listed for sale on sitepoint for a minimum of $25k USD. Its a decent price if you consider long term you are going to make that back in less than a year and if you wanted to break into the blogging business with guaranteed income, this is the way to do it. By the way, if you end up buying it as a result of reading this post, make sure you let the ol’ cow know.

Today marks the first day of the new system in place for advertising with Entrecard. There’s a blog post about it here.

Today I logged in and my investment blog now costs 512 credits to advertise on but with the new system, once an ad runs, your price halves.

This is actually pretty cool because it will keep the flux of advertisers coming where it had stagnated before because only the super wealthy EC droppers could afford to advertise on the most expensive blogs. I think this is going to even that out. In comparison, John Chow’s blog costs somewhere in the 16k credit mark right now…wow.

It’s been work work work around here lately. My full time job has me completely swamped which has had a bit of a negative effect on my blogging as you can tell by my less than frequent posts. I also haven’t had a whole lot to talk about lately. Although last month’s earnings report was less than stellar, I’ve already made more money from Text-Link-Ads this month than I had last month. That’s progress. There’s still spots available. As soon as they fill up, the price is likely to go up as a result of supply/demand.

John Chow made a post today about selling private ads and he has some really good points. The main one though is traffic. No matter what ad revenue stream you are going to go with, the most important thing to keep in mind is advertisers are looking to get the most “bang for their buck”. This blog gets around 1000 hits a month right now and that figure is growing. I know that seems like very little but consider the niche market I am in and consider the content of my posts and I think this is a pretty solid figure.

I know I sound like a broken record, but content is still king. Your readers are only going stick around if you write about things they are interested in. I don’t read blogs unless what is written is interesting to me. Ironically, if you write what you know about, your readers will find you because i guarantee you aren’t the only one interested in the things you think, do or talk about.

Now, blogging can be fun or it can be work, how it feels is up to you really. I write because I enjoy it. I also enjoy other things and I find time to enjoy them. Take gaming for example. I like Role Playing Games. For the past 7 years or so I have been running around hacking and slashing things in the world of Norrath. For those that don’t know, the game is Everquest or its counterpart Everquest II which is the same world, reimagined.

I enjoy this game because its an escape from my every day life and I don’t have to devote inordinate amounts of time just to get anywhere. If it feels like work, then it isn’t recreational. Keep it fun. I also don’t bring work home. I work FROM home two days a week but when that clock hits 5pm. I’m done. I give 40 hours a week to The Man and that’s all I give.

Have some fun, you know? All work and no play…

It’s time to update you all on this blog’s earnings. Last month was better than I expected. I’m in no way at a point where I can stop working, but progress is progress and I’m not going to poo poo what I have earned because it’s important to understand these things take time.

I started this blog nearly a year ago in May, 2007 and at that time it wasn’t making any money at all.

According to Google Analytics, page views from March 1 to March 31 were 579 with 500 unique visitors. That’s an average of 1.16 pages per visit and a bounce rate of 91%. These numbers I attribute to my use of Entrecard. The bounce rate is high because most people think by dropping as many cards as possible, you can artifically inflate your EC advertising price and by doing so appear as a more desirable place for other people to spend their credits. This is of course a double edged blade. On the one hand, at first glance that 300 or 500 credit price will impress people until they see

44% of the visits in March were new which means 56% were returning visits and that’s good news. It means I have some loyal readers but enough new ones that eventually something is going to pique their interest and convert them to RSS subscribers.

Text-Link-Ads: $44.72

Adsense: $1.42 *I removed most adsense ads because they were not performing well

Clickbank: $0.00

LinkShare: $0.00

NeverBlueAds: $0.00 *is the banner ad market dead?

ScratchBack: $0.00 *donate already sheesh! it’s cheap!

PPP Direct: $0.00 *no reviews requested so far

Project Wonderful: $1.54 *average cost of $.02 to advertise a 125×125 banner here! cheap!

AdToll: $0.00 *average cost of $.20 to $.40 to advertise with adtoll! again, cheap!

Those are the sources of income for this blog. Hosting is $15 a month for all my sites so at the end of the month I netted $32.68 which still beats February’s income. Gross income was $47.68 from all sources.

So, i’m not going to be able to retire on that kind of income but readership is growing and as traffic and readership increase, so should my income.

Several of the programs I mentioned above haven’t been there for the full month of March but you may not see them when I make my April income report if they don’t perform.

The winners have been announced in the $11,000.00 contest held at General Marketing Blog. I donated a $25 Visa Gift Card as a prize and the winner of that prize goes to Indocontest. As soon as Indocontest contacts me (I have emailed him/her already) I will be sending the card out.

Contests are a great way to generate buzz and traffic to your site. They let people know that you are willing to give back to the community that supports you. You also don’t have to run your own contest. By donating to someone else’s contest you gain other exposure and valuable backlinks which can help your search engine rankings and SEO efforts.

Although it’s nice to be able to award a big prize like an iPod touch or Playstation 3, the truth is most people are happy winning anything! I’ve given away books, Starbucks Cards, and now a Visa card. They didn’t break my bank and they make other people happy and hopefully loyal readers.

What are you going to give away to get some traffic and a small amount of fame?

On a few of the other blogs I read, they made a “day in the life of” post and I thought I would do the same. Why?

First of all, I’m not a “Pro Blogger”. I do this part time because I enjoy it and because I’ve become good at marketing what I know and making money from it. Success in blogging doesn’t happen overnight and you can’t expect instant results. I don’t expect everyone to read every single post I make either because not all posts interest everyone. I certainly don’t read every post John Chow or Darren Rowse make. I’m not always interested in what they have to say. Having said that, I hope you find this interesting. If nothing else, you learn a little more about who I am.

My day starts early. I get up when the alarm clock goes off at 5:25 am. The first thing I have to do every morning is shower. I can’t fully wake up until I’ve showered. For a lot of people it’s coffee first, but not me. I need to feel clean and the hot shower helps get me alert.

Breakfast(after I get dressed of course) is usually either a Protein shake (pictured is similar). It’s a great way to start the morning because your body is usually starved for nutrients after all that sleep. Here’s the recipe:

1 cup 1% lowfat milk
1 banana
1 scoop whey protein powder (chocolate flavor)
1 tsp ground flaxseed
optional:
1/4 cup blueberries (frozen, as it helps thicken the shake)

You can use whatever fruit you like, or add a few ice cubes to help thicken it.

Having sucked down my shake, I check my email and see if there are any news stories around some of my investments in the stock market. At 6:15 I’m out the door for my 25 minute walk to the bus. The bus leaves at 6:45 en route to San Jose, 25 miles north. I get on a train which leaves at 7:45 to take me to San Francisco where I work.

At 8:45 I de-train and walk 15 minutes to my job.

I work full time for the 5th largest bank in the world as a web developer. I’ll let you figure that out on your own. All my work is internal to the bank so you will never see it unless you work for them. 11:30 is lunch time…if you work in this city you have to go at 11:30 or at 1:00 in order to avoid the crowds.

What I love about working in the city is the choice of food. There are hundreds of possible places to go for lunch. Anything from Indian to Greek to Chinese and Mexican foods. Just pick a street and start walking, you’re bound to find something delicious. One of my favorite dishes is “the Tampopo”(pictured) from LongLife Noodle. A lot of people hate this place, but I love the combination of Ramen noodle, pork slices, naruto and bamboo shoots. I always spice it up with some Sriracha and soy sauce to give it extra kick.

After lunch it’s back to work until 3:45 when I head back to the train.

At 4:09 the train leaves and I do any work I need to on the train. Mostly it’s reading or coding, or watching videos on my iPod Touch.

At 5:10 the train arrives in San Jose and I board a bus back home. Arriving in Santa Cruz at 6:30 I then walk the 25 minutes back home.

Now it’s time for dinner, playing with the kid, visiting with the wife, watching some Simpsons or Family Guy episodes I’ve recorded over the weekend or playing some Everquest 2. I also read blogs, check my entrecard accounts and do any marketing or advertising for my blogs. I’m basically a night owl. Around midnight I’ll climb into bed ready to do it all over again. I get most of my personal work done between 8pm and midnight.

That’s pretty much an average day in my life. On Monday nights I hang out with a few friends at a local organic brewery and on Friday nights we play poker a lot. Sometimes we just head downtown, and often I’ll take in a movie (which I podcast about on The East Wing Podcast).

As you can see, I lead a very exciting life! No really, I do.

I just wanted to give you a glimpse of how a blogger like me lives. I don’t drive fancy cars, actually I don’t drive at all…I let my wife do all the driving. I don’t buy $60 burgers (yet) and I am trying live within my means. I make a good living and I do take vacations, just not every month. I hope you’ve enjoyed this and learned a little more about me.

Tim Sykes is giving away his PennyStocking DVD which is chock full of instructions and techniques for trading pink sheet and otc stocks.

Tim is famous (or infamous) for turning $12,415 into $2 million in 4 short years. By making thousands of trades and taking quick profits, he became a millionaire and started his own hedge fund.

Now you can learn the techniques he used to make his fortune. This is no BS get rich quick scheme, this involves trading stocks most investors consider a waste of time. It involves speculating and trading companies that may or may not even be making money. You can win this DVD by commenting on this post. That’s all there is to it. Good luck!

Are the ads sitting on your site becoming stale?

I just checked my Google Adsense stats and they are horrendous. It’s no wonder GOOG (the stock) has been tumbling end over end. I don’t think people click on the ads anymore. I get plenty of traffic and I know my ads are relevant, which brings me to make a point.

A while ago I stumbled onto a site after doing a search for something and it had to be the ugliest thing I had ever seen. I don’t remember what it was or where, but I remember thinking, this is terrible, why would anyone make a site this ugly. And then it hit me. Adsense ads were all in well place locations. So, this site had been built purposely for the sole reason of getting people there from searches in the hopes they would click other ads that were actually relevant. Pretty sneaky and it probably works. I didn’t click the ads, but I’m sure others do.

That brings me to my next point. How often do you change your ads/affiliate companies? I try to give any new ad program at least a month before pulling the plug. The internet is a fast paced place and ads start looking the same to readers. Loyal readers of your blog are most likely to ignore your ads altogether, which is fine, at least it should be because retaining readers should be more important than getting clicks on your ads. When your readers are loyal, you can suggest products and services and because they trust you, they are more likely to use them and use your links to sign up for them.

For example, my best earner is Text-Link-Ads. Currently I make $15 a month per link. It’s not a lot but it is what it is. With 10 spots available, guess what? That puts my first milestone target right on the money. Remember when I talked about goal setting, one of my goals is to have this blog earning $100 a month. That’s the first stop on the money train for me. If I can make $100 a month, I can make $1000 a month.

So, that all being said, I’ve removed Adsense from my front page. I haven’t decided if I am going to keep it elsewhere, but I have other sites that get more clicks form Adsense than this one so it’s not that big a deal. In place of Adsense, you can now see my Top Spots widget. A spot on there is $15…hey just like TLA…imagine that! That’s the only real change I’ve made to my ad structure for now. I’m giving everything else a little more time. By the way, I also recommend NeverBlueAds for affiliate ad placement, and Dedicore.net for web hosting.
