A few years ago I started one of my first online businesses and as part of the business you are encouraged to attend meetings and conferences.  The cost of these events was always reasonable (except for the driving time) but they were meant to keep you pumped up about the business.  It’s sort of like walking into a big room full of hype where half the people are really excited because they are already making money (likely because they signed you up) and the other half has no idea what the big deal is.

Now I am pretty laid back.  I live in Santa Cruz after all.  So all this hype and hooplah really struck me as odd.  I could see that the business has huge potential but I didn’t necessarily agree with the tactics of growing the business.  So out comes the organizer with good-old-boy-american-christian anthem music playing and the crowd cheering and I’m just kinda dumbfounded.

I don’t really remember the focus of the conference and I can’t recall who spoke but I did take one valuable thing away which has helped me succeed elsewhere in my endeavors.  Dreaming.

I don’t mean like when you sleep.  I mean having something that seems unattainable as a means of inspiration.  Take the Lamborghini Murcielago you see in the banner of this blog.  I don’t actually own one (yet).  I don’t even drive as a matter of fact, but I can imagine that vehicle sitting in my driveway and how cool that would look.  I imagine people walking by and asking me all about it and how I could afford such a machine.  I can imagine the sound of it as my wife pulls out onto the street.

These kinds of thoughts can be powerful because they remind you why you keep doing what you are doing.  I am sure everyday you question whether it’s worth all this effort and time.  Whether anyone actually reads anything you write.  You wonder if you are ever going to pay off that ridiculous credit card.  You will, but only if you keep persisting and dreaming and reaching for those things that seem out of reach.  When you have that kind of drive and ambition you can accomplish anything.
