Today I logged into my google analytics account to check out the usual statistics on my sites and see how traffic is flowing and where the bulk of it is coming from.

To my surprise, Google Organic results accounted for only 9 of the 197 visits I have had since Sept 15th, 36 from John Chow, 28 from my page on the Million Euro Wiki, 14 from John Cow and the rest aren’t worth mentioning.

These figures are important because on a month to month basis you can see exactly where your incomming links are and how many times they are being clicked on to get to your site. The longer you are tracking your statistics the more you will understand how people are getting to your site and thus where you should be focusing your efforts in marketing.

If I look over the last 3 months of data, John Chow is first, John Cow is second and Google organic results are third with Yahoo close behind at 5th. I’d like my Google results to increase but it’s a lot more work than referrals. Why? Simply put, Google bases results on content and keywords relevant to that content. The problem is some topics just aren’t keyword rich and I don’t write my articles just to appeal to the Google engines. In fact, I think it’s important to the integrity of your blog/website that you don’t try to entice the search engines because you will end up alienating your true readers. After all, just because you rank high for certain keywords doesn’t necessarily mean users are going to automatically be drawn to your site. Your content may not be what those people are looking for.

My efforts right now are to get my blog popularity out by word of mouth. This includes commenting on other blogs and discussing topics similar to what this blog is about. The resulting traffic, in my opinion is much more valuable because I am targeting specific audiences that are more inclined to see what I have to say on a similar topic.

So don’t worry if Google results aren’t the bulk of your traffic. Google may be number one in search results, but it doesn’t mean you can’t find traffic elsewhere.

Are you making maximum profits from Google?  You could be missing out on a huge income potential!
