So as you can see, the new theme is up. I quite like it. I think its speaks more about what this blog is about, and is much more pleasing to read.
After searching and searching for something I liked (I am using Wordpress) I couldn’t find anything that really grabbed me. Most of the themes out there are whimsical or dreamy, with flowers, trees, fields and other images in the header with layouts to match. There are also a lot of dreary themes out there, dark and brooding. Not at all what I was looking for.
To that end I found the simplest theme was the best to work with and proceeded to tweak and tweak. Fine tuning the theme to just my liking. It took a couple days of hard worn elbow grease but I think it was worth it.
The biggest issue I had when working on the theme is I couldn’t have a live view of it (I use Dreamweaver to edit code) because I couldn’t get any kind of test server running for php development. Instead I just kept uploading and refreshing the page and then make a change, rinse and repeat until everything worked the way I wanted it to.
If you have never built your own theme before, it’s a really good thing to do because you get a real grasp on CSS and understand the PHP a lot better. You will also be able to differentiate yourself from the rest of the bloggers out there.
At this point I would normally begin talking about SEO strategies again, but I am still working on my second entry for my SEO series. Stay tuned for the second installment soon.

A couple months ago this blog participated in a massive link campaign started by the Cows over at John Cow.com and I figured it would be a good time to check on the statistics generated by this campaign. But first, lets talk about some basics, mainly the components of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
Are Link backs Important?
It’s generally agreed by most SEO experts and most successful bloggers that yes, link backs are important. Link backs, or in other words, sites that link back to your site either in posts or as permanent links help search engines decide how important your site is. Google’s PageRank tool relies not only on incoming links but also the quality of those incoming links. What are quality links? Quality links come from sites that aren’t full of junk links or created just to get someone to come to the site only to find out there’s nothing there worth looking at. Some people refer to this trick as “BlackHat SEO”. These sites typically use keywords that are a big buzz in the news or use big celebrity names just to draw traffic. Google is pretty good about catching this trick so I wouldn’t suggest doing it yourself.

Unbox is Amazon.com’s answer to Apple’s iTunes. Unbox is a way to buy your favorite movies and tv shows online and watch them on your ipod or tivo.
As you can see you get to pick which movies or tv shows you want to view and then clicking on them will allow you to buy them from the Amazon.com store.This is another great way for affiliates to make money. If anyone buys a movie or tv show as a result of using your unbox widget, you get a percentage of the sale as commission. What I would like to see them do however is have a sidebar sized widget in the wide skyscraper format. It would be friendlier for blogs like this.
