Original content is extremely important. On my blog, The Proficient Investor I used to post feeds from news sources about stocks and the one thing it did is send my site to google hell, aka supplemental results.

See google is really good at figuring out duplicate content. So when I removed all those posts, my supplemental results started dropping quickly. I went from 758 or so supplemental results 3 weeks ago, to now only 400 supplemental results. I think it just takes a while for all that information to be recycled through.

Original content doesn’t mean you can’t use sources to quote from, but you just don’t want to be posting word for word, someone else’s work. That’s called plagiarism. That can get you in a lot of trouble.

Creating original content can be as simple as writing about what happened to you that day. Of course, it should be something interesting too or else nobody is really going to care. The hardest thing for me most of the time is deciding which ideas are worth writing about and which ones just need to stay locked away until they come to fruition.

Sometimes it’s like playing poker. You don’t want to go all in before the flop, even with pocket aces because you aren’t likely to get much out of it. So you slow play a little and then when you are sure you can win the hand, you go all in and take the pot.

Blogging is a lot like that. I try to spend some amount of time thinking about what I want to write. Especially if I am writing about stocks. Stock research is extremely important because you need to make sure you have all your facts correct before posting figures and projections about where you think a stock is going. Finally when it comes to writing the post, you want to name sources if any and you want to be sure you tell your audience whether or not you actually own the stock. Failure to disclaim that could lead some to believe you are trying to pump up interest in the stock so you can sell it.

Personal blogging of course may be a little different that what I have outlined here because most of the time you are going to be blogging about random things, events, people or places. Then it just becomes a matter of what are you going to be talking about. It could be anything and it may never be a really great post but you do it anyway because it keeps your mind from being stale.

Blogging should be anything but stale.
