The Secret Behind “The Secret”
It’s been called revolutionary, amazing, incredible, life-changing…it’s “the Secret”. You’ve seen it on Oprah, on the best seller list, everywhere. You’ve probably even bought the DVD or maybe the book, or the audio-book or watched the various versions free on the internet. Maybe, if you are like me you dug a little deeper.
I was introduced to “the Secret” by a friend who had rented the DVD. He told me nothing about it other than it was “interesting and you should watch it”. I was intrigued merely because of his ambiguity. So my wife and I sat down to watch this DVD some months ago. Slick production quality, great speakers and a well thought out presentation couldn’t hide the fact that “the Secret” is never told explicitly. What exactly is this big secret? The brutal honest truth is the secret is nothing more than the idea that what you wish for can come to you.
In the beginning of the film, it is mentioned that the narrator, whose name slips my mind at this moment, stumbled upon a book that changed her life. It was in this book that “the Secret” was revealed. Inside this book were all the answers she had been seeking for years about unlocking the wealth potential the universe had waited so long to reveal.
Sound like rubbish so far? I doubted it as well. In fact, I was sure this was all a crock and that it was going to be a waste of time to sit through it all. Then I was reminded of another similar film that I actually found interesting and quite moving spiritually. You have probably seen “What the bleep do we know?”. It’s about the perception of reality and how as we live and experience things, we actually create the reality we live in. I make the connection here because “the Secret” that was uncovered in the film is actually just repackaging a book that is now public domain and that I am offering as a free download from this blog.
Wallace D. Wattles published “The Science of Getting Rich” in 1910. This, my dear readers is the secret behind “the Secret”. The Science of Getting Rich purports that the wealth one accumulates is not a result necessarily of hard work and cleverness, but rather the inalienable right of every man, woman and child to be rich. It is the will of the universe to provide to you abundance and prosperity, because it is through these devices that you can then better contribute to the world around you.
Because it was written in 1910 there are certain things you have to accept while reading it. At the time, the industry of this country was changing drastically with the industrial revolution in full swing and the world on the verge of the first great war. Money was controlled by the few. There is a saying that you have probably heard of called the 90/10 rule. This rule states that 90 percent of the wealth is controlled by 10% of the population. That’s pretty mindblowing to begin with. It’s a stunning realization that you may not be in that 10% of the population. How then does that come to be? This, unfortunately is where the film diverges from the information in the book. Instead of providing concrete evidence as to how the principles of Wallace D. Wattles book can help you overcome your financial hurdles, it delves into more spiritual aspects of the universe and positive energy.
In the end, “the Secret” is no more than a new age self-help story. Does that mean it’s not worth watching? Actually no. I think everyone should watch it and you don’t have to pay for it either. Do a google search and you will find several places have it online, including YouTube. Of course if you want to have a high quality version you can buy the DVD- The Secret (Extended Edition).
I would have liked the author and narrator of the film go into more specific detail but what is in the film is at least interesting and entertaining. I have mentioned in previous articles the key thing missing from the film though. Dare I say, the secret behind “the Secret”?
Action.
That’s right. ACTION. Doing something. Getting out there and make things happen. Unfortunately, the film keeps saying that if you think about it and hope for it and keep your mind open that things will just come your way. While there may be some truth to that at least in the sense of coincidence happening, what you must really do is get off your butt and do something about it. When was the last time a bag of money fell into your lap when you were sitting at the computer? Probably never right? Well, what were you doing that would cause that to happen? This is the key difference. This is the real secret. Visualization is great, it’s important, but it’s not the end-all be-all solution to your problems because visualization without action is useless. It’s like having a Ferrari without the engine. It looks good and it’s pretty, but really it’s useless because you can’t go anywhere or do anything with it. So then, is a thought. Thoughts without action are just ideas waiting to happen.
If Edison or Einstein kept their thoughts to themselves instead of putting those thoughts into action…well, you probably wouldn’t be reading this right now.
So…I encourage you to watch “the Secret” but keep in mind the key to making it work is through your actions. I also encourage you to read The Science of Getting Rich eBook which you can download from here. I welcome any comments you have on this or any other posts on this blog. I would love to hear your experience using the principles of “the Secret” and the Law of Attraction.
